To Buy Or NOT To Buy a Historic Home...

Ca d'Zan at Ringling MuseumThough  Sarasota's History is short compared to other areas of the country, we are finally able to call some of our lovely homes and buildings Historic! We have a Historic Preservation Society as do most communities of size and character. Ours was certainly assisted by the initial contributions of the likes of Owen Burns, Dwight James Baum and Thomas Reed Martin all involved in the Heyday of Sarasota's Boom Times during the Ringling Era. Their imprint is felt throughout the coastal area from the Whitfield Estates Community into Downtown and beyond!

Sadly, many of these amazing homes have fallen into disrepair with owners who purchased to rent out due to the prime location, turning the home into a cash cow. Unfortunately, you can't squeeze milk from a dead bovine so when the life is wrenched from the home, it is razed to make way for construction. Many of the Turn-of-the Century homes are meeting this fate due to the ignorance of the Investor and the high cost of painstaking renovations.

These homes are easily recognized by their true Italian Mediterranean Style: Square Block with Pink, Cream and Orangey Terracotta colors with Decorative tilework, Arches, Loggias and other Italian/Moorish/Greek architectural details. In many instances, a small similar-styled cottage was at the rear of the property to house staff which gives you an idea of the wealth of the Owners. You can see splendid examples in the neighborhoods of Laurel Park, Burns Square, and the Grandest of All... Ca d'Zan also known as the House of John! Ringling that is. You'll find this magnificent palatial home at the bayfront, on the grounds of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. It's worth the tour!

Sarasota School of ArchitectureAnother era that has not been lost on Sarasota is the Mid-Century Modern when the Sarasota School of Architecture flourished! The homes are characterized by deep overhangs of cantilevered eaves, lots of glass usually floor to ceiling, high ceilings, connecting breezeways on larger projects, curvilinear design making for creative and outstanding homes and commercial buildings that are in high demand today with the living Architects still discussing the merits of their work!

Buying a home with History can be a delightful prospect if you look forward to being a Steward of that building and caring for it as long as you own it. Becoming part of the preservation of a community's heritage, even in a small way, is strengthening the ties that bind tenderly.

When you are ready to search for and buy your piece of Sarasota History, put the Extreme Home Selling Team to work for YOU!
