The Myakka Valley Ranches situated next to the Myakka River State Park is part of the original Vanderipe cattle ranch east of the interstate, off of Clark Road. James and Nancy Vanderipe settled in the area on the Braden River in the mid-1800s from the state of Kentucky. Capt. William Vanderipe was known as strong man. Their son was a Confederate soldier and Manatee County’s first Postmaster who swam across a swollen, alligator-infested river to get to a commission meeting.
Following his parents’ profession, Capt. Vanderipe was one of the largest cattle owners along the Braden and Manatee Rivers in addition to being a real estate investor. His son, Henry and wife Martha, lived on the family Myakka Ranch into the 1950s when it was sold. The railway ran through the area connecting Sarasota and Arcadia. Legend has it that Martha would give her grocery list to someone on the train and her groceries would be delivered on the return trip. About all that’s left of the homestead today is the chimney.
When the concept of the Ranches was first put on the drawing board, it was advertised as the City’s Escape from the Rush of a Hectic Life where a family could build a country home and ride horses. Each of the home-sites were primarily platted as 5 acres. Some were purchased together to create much larger parcels.
Zoning is rather more lenient for outbuildings, allowing the current presence of barns, garden sheds, etc. With 8 roads, low traffic and 17 miles of trails criss-crossing the entire neighborhood, people are comfortable riding their horses along with biking, walking or jogging in the area safely. There is an abundance of open space, wildlife and mature natural landscape providing a different, intriguing view along the way. Bordering on a very large 1,500 acre easement including wetlands and waterfront parks, living next to Myakka State Park delivers quiet privacy for the Residents!
Area Schools include Lakeview Elementary, Sarasota Middle with Riverview High serving the older teens. Most Residents tend to be year-round and older creating a stable calm environment. There are vegetable gardens growing delights; several have horses and a zebra was spotted amongst the livestock at one point! The HOA is under $475 annually to pay for the private road maintenance. The Residents also have book clubs, a women’s forum, and a saddle club featuring a monthly speaker.
Over the past year, 16 homes have sold from $175,000 to $775,000! The sold homes’ sizes range from a 3 bed/2bath to a 6bed/5bath and 1,467sf to 6,619sf! So you can see that the homes come in many sizes, shapes and configurations!
