How Does YOUR Garden Grow?

GREEN THUMBDo you have a green thumb or a bruised thumb? We'd all like to think that of ourselves as fairly responsible plant parents with vivid green ferns and palms breathing life into the corners of our homes, adding wholesome color to nooks and crannies and generally decorating our world.

Here are some of the most important terms which one should be familiar as a new or seasoned Gardener...

Soil TEXTURE: This is simply the size ranges of the mineral particles that make up a particular soil. Defined in three basic classes like Clay (small), Silt (medium) and Sand (large). Very seldom is a soil purely one type so the description may read as sandy clay or silty clay. A soil with equal parts of each is called LOAM.

A soil that aggregates or clumps together into larger pieces is considered having STRUCTURE. Soil with poor structure leaves roots gasping for air. Good structure creates small pores to hold water and large pores to hold air. ORGANIC MATTER can help manage soil to give it better structure.

A FRIABLE soil gently crumbles when you squeeze it; TILTH is the physical condition as far as plants are concerned. WELL-DRAINED soil allows water to move through the soil reaching the root system.

CULTIVATION on one hand means to stir the soil, loosening the surface and kill weeds. On the other hand, it also means to carefully tend to plants, caring for them like a dear friendship.
