Home Renovations: How to Hire a Pro...... Or NOT!

Summer is drawing to a close... The kids have all returned to school. More Homeowners are spending time inside versus out now as the weather turns toward cooler temps in anticipation of Fall and Winter. Have you been eyeing the dirty paint? Or the worn cabinets? Perhaps you're no longer "feelin' the love" for the custom vanity in your hall bath.
Ahhhh yes America, I can smell it now..... Remodeling Season is setting in! I know what you're thinking. There's just enough time BEFORE the Holidays to get the job done and with everybody out of the house most of the day, this shouldn't be too big of a hassle, right? RIGHT??

Remodel Gone Wrong

Hahahah hahahahahahahaah <whew!>

Let's get one thing straight, Cupcake! Remodeling, even a small corner of your World, is ALWAYS a hassle because it disrupts the Flow of You!
Start there and you will adapt to the process easier. Hiring the right Team of Contractors is key to keeping the flow smooth and even, but avoiding the shady, unscrupulous ones is as important as making the right choice.

Home Advisor offers tips to help you get there in (mostly) one piece. ::hint:: Always budget a 10-20% overage for hidden costs.

Several ways you can reduce the cost of the job:
Handle the Demolition yourself if it doesn't involve frying or drowning yourself. If Electricity or Plumbing are involved, be certain you understand how to do it properly or are supervised!
Be the Contractor's Apprentice, BUT ONLY IF THEY ARE OPEN TO IT. You can LEARN new skills. They get a helper at NO COST. You get a LOWER BILL in the end!
Pay for the supplies directly using the Contractor's Discount at Big Box Stores. No MarkUp by Contractor, but you pay upfront for supplies.

Negotiate with your Contractors for fair terms and conditions.Be very clear on exactly what you want done by Writing it down, Drawing it out and Reviewing frequently. Just don't undervalue the skills of your Tradesmen!

Write it Down   Draw it Out   Review it Frequently
