We are truly Blessed to live in a very special place: Sarasota! The Native American Tribes knew a good thing when they saw it. They didn't have fancy forecasting, awesome aircraft, or complex computations to tell them when a storm was brewing. They examined the shape of the earth, felt the wind on their cheek, watched the animals take cover to understand the natural ecosystem of Sarasota Bay and Inland Areas.
Even today, with our collective of enormous talent of Engineers, Scientists, and Meteorologists, stepping outside to smell the incoming rain, see the path of the wind and watch the bend of the trees can tell you a lot about the conditions. But the worst of the worst always strikes as a surprise to most people. .. The raging torrent of Flood Waters! The power of the Flood can sweep you off your feet and carry you into another County! It can erode highways within minutes! It can wash through homes filling them with mud and silt like a child playing mud-cakes in a puddle.
Sarasota has long been "protected" from a direct Hurricane hit because of it's location, however, also due to its close proximity on the southwest side of Mighty Tampa Bay, it sits in the worst possible position for extreme flooding if Tampa ever takes a direct strike. Hurricanes circulate counter-clockwise so the warm waters would stoke the hurricane, feeding it up and around from Tampa back to Manatee and Sarasota Counties directly south.
I've lived in Sarasota since October 1987, 28 years and have yet to see or experience a terrible storm right here in Sarasota. Charlie was the nearest thing to a strike, but we were spared the destruction that Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda felt ONLY because the warm waters of Charlotte Harbor acted like a magnet and drew that storm inward, redirecting it from it's northbound path up the Western Gulf Coast!
People still have Blue Tarp Roofs in some areas....
But in the end, we Floridians pull together! As Sarasotans, we drove, biked, ran to help our neighbors, friends and family devastated by this phenom called Charlie! We did not rest on our Lucky Laurels, no indeed. We packed up our extra bottles of water, blankets and box fans and headed south into the danger zone because it coulda, shoulda, woulda been us..
We are blessed!
